Me too and eight-track tapes

I'm old enough to remember when relational databases were controversial.
Me too. Sometime talking about the computer industry in the 21st century feels like talking about the iPod vs. eight-track tapes with my kids. (Not to mention reel-to-reel. Remember those?)

It seems to me that so much is lost when we lose the diversity. Whether it be the loss of legitimate DB model competition, legitimate language competition, operating systems, you name it. The vibrancy of the market is lost when everyone is selling you different shades of beige.
